>In a press conference for a Joint Commission meeting with the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Marty Natalegawa, in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, Sunday, July 24, 2011, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States supports an ‘open dialogue’ between the Government of Indonesia and Papuan representatives to address local grievances.
Hillary said during the press conference:
“With respect to Papua, the United States supports the territorial integrity of Indonesia, including Papua and West Papua. We, of course, believe in an open dialogue between the representatives of Papua and the Government of Indonesia to resolve the complaint and supporting development.â€
Hillary Clinton also gave appreciation of the efforts made by the Government of Indonesia to address the Papua issue so far:
“This is a problem for the Government of Indonesia, and they handle it. And we expect to see the full implementation of special autonomy law for Papua, which is the commitment of the Government of Indonesia to address the many problems that have been disclosed.â€
Concerning the ‘alleged’ existence of repressive actions of the associated security apparatus of Orang Asli Papua, the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Marty Natalegawa said:
“Concerns about human rights violations are being handled by the Jakarta Government and do not require the involvement of ‘external parties’ to resolve the issue.â€
