Lily Wahid: Freeport Diduga Bayar Aparat US$ 14 Juta
(translated from Indonesian by AKR & staff)

Lily Wahid, Member of the People’s Representative Council, admitted to being informed that PT Freeport Indonesia ‘payed up to U.S. $14 million’ to secure their assests in Timika, [site of the ongoing Freeport miner’s strike and recent security force violence].

The money was allegedly given to security forces and military police.

“U.S. $14 million has been disbursed to the military / police for safeguarding the assests of PT Freeport,”

said Lily, in the capitol, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (26/10/2011).

Lily also alleged that the money had something to do with the addition of Mobile Brigade personnel that were deployed to secure the unrest in the area. She also suggested the extra troops are hired thugs.

“It could be there is a link between the money and the addition of Brimob personnel sent yesterday,” she said.

Earlier, dozens of people, on behalf of residents living around the area of PT Freeport, went to the House of Representatives. They requested that the conditions in the vicinity of Freeport again return to normal.

According to representatives of the citizens, after the clashes and shootings that occurred around the Freeport area, the road between Timika and Tembagapura is ‘not safe.’ If residents of Timika want to go to the Tembagapura agency, they must be escorted.
