Malaysia’s government has introduced a sweeping “anti-fake news” bill that critics say could stifle criticism of Prime Minister Najib Razak and his supremacist political party before a national election later this year.

Meanwhile, artist Fahmi Reza fights back with his art.

Fight fake news with facts, not Act.

The anti-fake Act would ban “any news, information, data and reports which are wholly or partly false, whether in the form of features, visuals or audio recordings or in any other form capable of suggesting words or ideas.”

It would even cover people outside the country, as long as the information affected Malaysia or Malaysians.

The Act, which must be approved by parliament, calls for penalizing violators with a 10-year jail, a fine of up to RM 500,000 ($128,000) or both.
