The father of a West Papuan musician has been detained by police at Vanimo along Papua New Guinea’s border with Indonesia.

Ronny Kareni is a bass player in the Taburas band. His father Abraham Kareni and three other men were beaten and detained by Vanimo Police who arrived in 3 vehicles loaded with 15-20 men.

The four West Papuans had just returned from their homeland after attending the 3rd West Papuan Congress.

There were no warrants for their arrests and they are being held in Police custody without charge. So far they have been interviewed by the Criminal Investigations Division and are awaiting an interview with Customs.

An Australian Human Rights organization has contacted the Provincial Police Commander Mr Vincent Porkas, regarding the matter. He has assured them that all four detainees will be released but that is yet to happen.

Mr Porkas can be contacted by his mobile number +675 73383597. Please put pressure on him to release the men, who have come to PNG to seek protection from the repressive Indonesian occupiers of West Papua.
