Democratic change has been demanded across the Middle East. But was what seems like a spontaneous revolution actually a strategically planned event, fabricated by ‘revolution consultants’ long in advance?

Revolution consultants are the worst nightmare of every regime. Srdja Popovic was a founder of the organisation ‘Otpor’, a revolution training school. It was instrumental in the overthrow of Slobodan Milosevic in the 1990s and has now inspired a new generation of activists. Political commentators like William Engdahl are convinced Otpor is being financed by the USA. “The people from Otpor gave us a book in which they described all their strategies”, says Ezzedine Zaatour of the Tunisian uprising. That book was written by an American, Gene Sharp, and is now considered the “revolution guide book”, being used by opposition movements worldwide. As Optor release their latest gadget, a resistance training computer game sponsored by American organisations, world leaders are voicing their concerns. “This is called a gentle coup!”, insists Hugo Chavez.

I’m sorry but you guys are a bunch of nut people! I’m an Arab and I can tell from your sick “analysis” of our revolutions that if there is ever any brainwashing conspiracy in the world it would be here, in such websites and in your heads! No one conspired to make us protest against the gangsters you call our leaders. We did this out of our own knowledge that it’s the time to pull the sticks out of our wheels. These American nutters form which you quote that there are people orchestrated events in north Africa are actually the godfathers of the stupidity theory so called conspiracy! Keep taking their word for it. Keep stupid and illusive. No one will lose anything but you!

Of course, the Arab Spring uprisings were orchestrated by people from their own countries. The video isn’t suggesting that they were manipulated by Americans to revolt. However, it’s a fact that leaders of both the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings met with members of Otpor (a Serbian organization, not American BTW) and had read Gene Sharp’s book, “From Dictatorship to Democracy”, a guide to non-violent revolutions. This does not suggest that the revolutions were orchestrated by Americans though.

The video speculates that Otpor are funded by Americans (and westerners in general), but of course Hosni Mubarak and the Egyptian military have been primarily funded by Americans (with much more money) for the past 40 years as well. People with tons of money will fund anything that they think will bring them even more money.

Throughout the 20th century, virtually every revolutionary figure would have read Marx and Engels — does that mean that every revolution in the 20th century was run by Germany? Of course not. Gene Sharp’s book has been translated into over 30 languages and is available for free on the internet. Even the Muslim Brotherhood actually posted a copy of the book on their website during the 2011 revolution in Egypt. There is no conspiracy here, only a sharing and exchange of useful ideas.
