As a child growing up in the remote highlands of West Papua, we often heard stories from the elders about how our ancestors’ spirits lived in the mountains and forests. How they would cry if they saw what is happening today. Illegal logging is rife, and the world’s largest gold and copper mine, Freeport, has caused permanent environmental devastation to our sacred lands that is visible from space. You would think that being home to the world’s largest goldmine and huge natural gas deposits, West Papua would be a land of riches. Yet we remain the poorest and least developed part of all of Indonesia. There is a lack of basic healthcare, and literacy levels are lower than the national average.

The OPM was originally founded in Manokwari in February 1965. This organization was set up with the name of the Free Papua Liberation Organization (OPPM) but the Government of the Republic of Indonesia willfully released that it was the OPM (Free Papua Organization), in other words implying that the new organization could be criticized as a struggle for Separatism, Makar (treason), Terrorism and the like.

EVER SINCE THE 1970S, THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN TAKING MEASURES TO SUPRESS THE CULTURAL RIGHTS OF THE INDIGENOUS PAPUA PEOPLE. This is clear from the murder of two indigenous Papuan cultural activists, the late Arnold Ap, curator of the Anthropological Museum of the Cenderawasih University, and Eduard Mofu, who was a member of the staff of the Museum, in April 1984. This crime against humanity was perpetrated by members of the army’s elite corps known as Kopasus which was present in the area at the time.

Sisyphus, who was punished by Zeus and made to roll a huge boulder up a steep hill. Before reaching the top however, the rock would always roll back down, forcing him to restart his task. It was a punishment given to King Sisyphus for his arrogance in regarding himself cleverer than Zeus, Father of the Gods. So it was that Sisyphus was consigned to an eternity of futility and ceaseless frustration. It serves as a very apt metaphor for the current efforts of the exiled Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) to secure a form of autonomy for Tibetans from the Chinese Regime, although the punishment in this case has been imposed, not by an all powerful deity, but a collective desperation and myopia that has witnessed unending failure and disappointment as China rejects each compromise offered by the CTA, forcing them to retreat, only to make another arduous and vacuous attempt at progress.

Special Autonomy is a political solution or a political bargaining between the peoples of Papua and Indonesia, in order that Papuans remain in Indonesia with a guarantee to protect the people of Papua, the empowerment of indigenous Papuans, and affirmative action for indigenous Papuans. However, in reality, the Special Autonomy has truly failed. Special Autonomy has truly become a killing machine of God’s people in Papua and a destroyer of a future Papuan society and nation.
